(Thurston County, NE) -- A pedestrian is killed after she's hit by a Nebraska State Patrol vehicle.
The NSP says they've requested the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the fatal Thursday morning crash that involved an NSP investigator near Walthill. NSP investigators say the crash happened just after 5:00 Thursday morning, when an trooper was southbound on Highway 77. The state patrol says the trooper was on duty, driving an unmarked NSP vehicle, when it hit a pedestrian in the southbound lane of Highway 77 about one mile north of Walthill.
The state patrol says the trooper immediately called for paramedics, with Macy Rescue responding to the scene. NSP says the pedestrian, an adult woman, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Preliminary investigation shows that the pedestrian had left a rural home on the east side of Highway 77, crossed the northbound lane of Highway 77, and was in the southbound lane at the time the crash. No one else was injured in the incident.
“We are heartbroken at this tragic incident,” said Colonel John Bolduc. “Our condolences are with the family of the pedestrian and our thoughts are also with our investigator who was involved in this unfortunate situation.”
The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office is the primary investigating agency. NSP has also requested assistance from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office with the crash reconstruction aspect of the investigation.
