(Elkhorn, NE) -- Omaha Police identify the man investigators say shot at officers before turning the gun on himself Thursday night.
OPD says officers were called to an Elkhorn apartment building near Main and Poplar streets just before 9:00 Thursday night for a domestic disturbance involving 32 year old Thomas Headley. Police say before officers arrived on the scene, they were told that Headley was intoxicated and acting aggressively. Omaha Police say while on the way to the scene, Headley left the apartment wearing a tactical vest and carrying a rifle. Investigators say responding officers met with Headley's wife who told them that Headley was also in possession of a handgun.
Omaha Police say officers who were searching the area located Headley on the north corner of the apartment complex, near the garages. Investigators say officers saw that Headley did have a rifle and gave him commands to drop his weapon. Police say Headley fired the rifle in the direction of officers, who immediately moved to a position of cover, before he walked behind the garage. Investigators say within seconds, officers heard a second shot.
OPD says after the second shot was heard, officers say Headley fall to the ground. Police say as officers approached Headley, they saw that he had taken his own life. Officers attempted CPR but Headley was pronounced dead at the scene by OFD medics.
Investigators say no Omaha Police Officers fired their weapons and body worn camera evidence supported officer's statements. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday. OPD says ballistic testing and further investigation are underway. The Omaha Police Officer Involved Investigation Team is investigating with the assistance of the Nebraska State Patrol. Under Nebraska law, the incident will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is complete.
