(Lincoln, NE) -- The Lincoln Police Department is seeing a huge uptick in catalytic converter thefts since the start of the year.
LPD says since January 1st, there have been 59 reports of catalytic converters stolen from vehicles. Investigators say that is more than reported in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 combined. The estimated loss from these cases is around $55,000. In most but not all cases, it appears that commercial vehicles and businesses are targeted.
Police say usually power tools are used to remove the converter that is located under the vehicle. They say to consider where you are parking vehicles overnight, especially when left unattended in a commercial lot.
In 2020, police say there were 274 reports of catalytic converter thefts made with a total loss and damage amount of almost $210,000.
