A teen is in hot water following a Thursday morning pursuit near Grand Island that saw speeds of 130 miles per hour.
The Nebraska State Patrol says just after 12:00 Thursday morning, a trooper clocked an eastbound Hyundai Genesis going 111 miles per hour on Interstate 80 near Grand Island. The State Patrol says the trooper attempted a traffic stop and the Hyundai came to a stop on the shoulder. They say the Hyundai then moved forward and stopped multiple times before accelerating and fleeing the traffic stop, leading the trooper to initiate a pursuit.
The NSP says the Hyundai continued eastbound on I-80, reaching speeds of 130 miles per hour before exiting the interstate near Giltner. Investigators say the vehicle then went southbound on the 41B spur for about two miles before slowing to a stop.
The State Patrol says after coming to a stop, three passengers got out of the vehicle before the driver took off again. The trooper continued the pursuit, while the three passengers were located by another trooper.
A few minutes later, NSP says the vehicle came to a stop voluntarily and the trooper was able to immediately take the 17 year old driver into custody. The teen was cited for felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana – less than one ounce, no operator’s license, no valid registration, and several traffic violations, as well as an active warrant from Adams County. Investigators say the teen was turned over to probation.
The other occupants in the vehicle, all juveniles, were cited for possession of marijuana – less than one ounce and released to their parents. The entire pursuit lasted approximately seven minutes.
