Work begins to reopen Omaha’s riverside Freedom Park after the "Flood of 2019."
FEMA recently okayed some funding for cleanup.
“They’re digging out the big anchor chains that we had stretched out on the turf close to the Missouri River, which in some cases are under probably 9 or 12 inches of silt,” Omaha Parks and Recreation's Dennis Bryers told 6 News.
The park honors the U.S. uniformed military with artifacts on display, including the USS "Hazard," procured by the city about 50 years ago.
“Cleanup here is moving a lot of tree debris, shrubs and branches that floated down and were deposited here, and there’s a lot of silt that has to be cleaned up,” Bryers said.
A reopening of Freedom Park has not been set, as the city awaits more FEMA funding for some repair work.
The estimated cost of getting the park open is around $200,000.
