A Lincoln Police officer who was shot and critically wounded in the line of duty Wednesday was transferred to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha Thursday evening.
Luis "Mario" Herrera is a 23 year veteran of the Lincoln Police Department. Police say Herrera was not wearing a bullet proof vest when he was shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant.
Herrera underwent several surgeries and is fighting for his life. Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister says Herrera was not wearing a ballistic vest when he was shot in the chest.
Herrera’s family says he has received several blood transfusions, and those that want to help can donate blood at the Nebraska Blood Bank.
Lincoln Police say officers were at a home in the area of 33rd and Vine serving a second-degree assault arrest warrant for 17 year old Felipe Vazquez in connection to a March homicide.
Officers said that during the process of serving the warrant, Herrera was shot after Vazquez and another suspect, Orian Ross, broke through the front window of the home and attempted to flee.
Both were apprehended.
