A new TestNebrasksa COVID-19 test site opened on Monday in South Omaha. It comes just days after a major site shut down at 50th and G Streets.
People started lining up in their vehicles just after noon near the Metro Community College South Omaha campus.
“I think it’s very important,” south Omaha resident Elena Gonzalez told 6 news. "I am an old lady and I’m in the group that could have more problems.”
She and others living in south Omaha hope the TestNebraska site will be as popular as the one that closed down last week, which was run by Douglas County, Nebraska Medicine and OneWorld Community Health Centers.
According to statistics from the Douglas County Health Department south Omaha is the hardest hit area by Covid-19.
“When we heard Nebraska Medicine couldn’t really do any testing anymore at 50th and G because of some personnel issues we knew immediately we had to look around,” Dr. Adi Pour, Director of Douglas County Health Department tells 6 News.
She said they had to move quickly and called on the state to step up with a TestNebraska site. “This is not optimal for everyone but to have it up and running so fast, I’m really grateful for that,” Dr. Pour says.
TestNebraska requires people to register online, as well as have an email address. But not everyone has access to the internet. Anyone who has trouble registering online can still show up and someone will help.
It’s open from 1 pm to 6 pm Monday through Saturday. The state says the site will remain at that location into the foreseeable future
