Investigators say careless smoking sparked a two alarm apartment building fire late Sunday night.
Omaha firefighters found smoke and flames as they arrived at the apartment building near 86th and R Plaza.
It took crews nearly an hour to put out the flames, which went from the ground level all the way up to the attic and then the roof.
The fire department says 20 to 30 people are now without a place to live. One pet was found dead inside one of the units.
Fire investigators said the cause of the fire is due to accidental improper disposal of smoking materials on a deck.
