The Douglas County Board of Health unanimously approves a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis.
During the panel's public hearing at the Omaha-Douglas Civic Center, County Health Director Dr. Adi Pour said "we are hearing you; we hear your cries for justice, and we want to be part of the solution.
"This is requiring a large solution. There isn't a small tweak that can be done here and there," Pour said.
The resolution approved Wednesday morning contains 22 action items.
It says "more than 100 studies have linked racism to worse health outcomes.
Racism and segregation in Douglas County have exacerbated a health divide resulting in disparities for premature deaths, death rates for cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease, average and median age of deaths."
