Hy-Vee will give away free jumbo, seedless watermelons to customers at the Stony Brook location in Omaha and the Madison Avenue store in Council Bluffs on Friday.
The grocery store chain says each location will give away approximately 970 watermelons. The giveaways will start at 10:00 AM and continue until noon, or while supplies last.
Hy-Vee is doing the giveaway in collaboration with its melon supplier Sol Group. The grocer says they're donating the watermelons to Hy-Vee customers as COVID-19 continues to impact individuals and families across Iowa and Nebraska. "As more families become financially impacted by the pandemic, Hy-Vee and Sol believe it’s important to provide access to healthy produce during this time of need."
Watermelons will be distributed to customers for free on a first-come, first-served basis. The watermelons will be loaded into customer vehicles using a contact-less method to limit physical contact.
The giveaway at the Stony Brook Hy-Vee will take place in the parking lot north of the store, while the event at the Madison Avenue Hy-Vee will take place in the parking lot east of the store.
All event helpers will be wearing masks and gloves for additional safety measures. No walk-ups will be allowed.
