The Omaha Police Department says they have been made aware of a scam involving the use of an officer's name.
OPD says they found out about the scam a few weeks ago, but at that time they did not have any victims identified. According to a statement on Wednesday, the scam artist would call and identify himself as an active Omaha Police Sergeant.
The department says the scam artist would then advise the person that they had a warrant and in order to take care of the warrant they would need to secure bail by purchasing money cards.
Recently detectives were made aware of a victim that purchased various money cards in order to take care of the alleged warrant. The scam artist had the victim read the card numbers off and told the victim the money would be refunded once the warrant was taken care of in court.
Police believe that the suspect is ghosting or spoofing phone numbers that may be associated with the officer. Omaha Police remind the community that officers will not make phone calls asking for money for a warrant.
