Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert on Thursday morning outlined details on a proposal she's calling "Road Map to Better Streets".
She is proposing a $200 million bond issue for street improvements. If the city council approves it the issue would be on the ballot for Omaha voters in the May 12 primary election.
Stothert says potholes have been a major problem and the city streets have been under-funded for 50 years.
Stothert says the decision for a bond issue was made after consulting with independent engineers. They say the City of Omaha should spend $75 million annually to resurface 250 lane miles of road.
Stothert says the city spends about $41 million each year to resurface 125 miles, leaving a$34 million shortfall.
The five year bond would provide $40 million a year which would allow the city to keep up with repairs. Stothert says the bond will cost each owner of a $100,000 home about $35 a year.
