Update: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office identified the man killed in this morning's accident on Blair High Road as 38 year old Heriberto Martinez-Torres of Omaha.
Investigators say Martinez-Torres was northbound and was attempting to make a left turn onto Highway 36 when he was hit by a semi driven by Dale Laflin of Orchard, Nebraska. He was not hurt.
The preliminary investigation shows both drivers were wearing seat belts. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
The Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement was requested to inspect the semi-tractor/trailer. No citations were issued at the scene.
One person was killed in a two-vehicle traffic accident at Blair High Road and Bennington Road shortly before 8 o'clock Friday morning.
6 News says according to Douglas County investigators a semi carrying a cargo of chickens was southbound on Blair High Road.
Douglas County Sheriff's Captain Wayne Hudson tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB, "The semi-truck was traveling southbound on Highway 133 when the light may have been yellow. The other vehicle was facing north, ready to go west on Highway 36 when both vehicles collided."
Captain Hudson says this intersection is very well marked. There are no blind hills or driveways. Drivers get plenty of notice that the light is going to turn red so there is no reason why we should have that amount of accidents at that intersection. He says, “This is what I call an avoidable accident.”
Investigators say the man driving the Camry was killed. He was the only one in the car. Southbound lanes of Blair High and westbound lanes of Bennington Road were shut down during the initial investigation.
The investigation into the accident continues.
