The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the release of water from Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota will continue to run high through the end of November.
Gavins Point is the last in a series of six dams along the Missouri River, which produced record flooding in Iowa and Nebraska this year.
The release rate of 80,000 cubic feet per second is more than twice the average release for this time of year. The Corps says they need to empty the system's reservoirs of flood water before the 2020 runoff season.
"Failure to evacuate the stored flood water will lead to increased flood risk in 2020,” says Corps spokesman John Remus.
