Bellevue, Ne Update: More details have been released following an hour’s long stand-off east of the Bellevue Bridge that started around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The Iowa State Patrol reports that they received a tip from a concerned citizen about a man with warrants issued out of Michigan. That person was able to give detailed information on the type of vehicle the person was driving and where they may be headed at what time. The State Patrol conducted a stop. The driver, 45 year old Eric David Kramer of Stanton, Michigan came to a rolling stop. Kramer was seen pointing a handgun to his own head. A passenger inside Kramer's vehicle was able to make a run for it and was caught.
Hostage negotiators were called to the scene. The roadway between I-29 and the Bellevue Bridge remained close until around 3:15 when the situation ended peacefully. A team was able to deploy a chemical agent, tear gas into Kramer's vehicle. At that time he gave up his weapon and exited the vehicle and surrendered without further incident. He was checked out by medics at the scene before he was taken into custody.
Agencies that were able to bring the standoff to a peaceful end include Omaha Police, Sarpy County Sheriff's Office, Mills County Sheriff's Office, Pottawattamie County Sheriff's office, Bellevue Police and the Iowa State Patrol.
Officials say the warrants issued in Michigan for Kramer were felonies, possibly assault.
SWAT officers were seen going in to a standoff situation east of the Bellevue Bridge around 3 p.m. Wednesday. This after a standoff situation that started around 5 a.m. This was on a stretch of road west of I-29 in Iowa to the Bellevue Bridge. Police were trying to conduct a traffic stop and that is what started the situation.
The driver was surrounded by officers from a number of agencies. There were reports that the man was armed and not cooperating with officials. Nebraska State Patrol troopers extended the perimeter several times Wednesday as the standoff continued.
That section of roadway remained closed Wednesday afternoon.
