A baseball field at an Omaha park was dedicated to a fallen police officer on Wednesday. The newly renovated Kerrie Orozco Memorial Ballfield at Miller Park features a new playing surface, dugouts, batting cages, concession stand and scoreboard.
The field is named for officer Kerrie Orozco, who was killed in the line of duty four years ago. Police officers, city officials and community members gathered at the north Omaha park to formally dedicate the field. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Orozco’s four year old daughter, Olivia.
Before she was shot and killed May 20, 2015, Officer Orozco was heavily involved in volunteering, particularly as a little league coach with Police Athletics for Community Engagement, better known as PACE.
Following Wednesday's ceremony, PACE volunteers played a game against youth from the neighborhood to properly break in the field. “This field will be a lasting tribute to Kerrie's legacy of kindness and giving,” Mayor Jean Stothert said. “I hope that every player who takes the field and every fan who sits in the bleachers will think about everything Karrie taught her players.”
