Council Bluffs Police say a 20 year old woman was shot in the leg early Thursday morning after three men tried to steal a car from her garage.
20 year old Carmen Hernandez and 19 Eric Martinez were awoken by the sound of someone starting one of their vehicles in a detached garage at 2902 Avenue K around 4:00 a.m.
Police say Hernandez and Martinez ran out of the house to investigate and saw three men near their garage. The three then took off running through an alley. Hernandez told police she was running after the men when one of them fired several rounds at her from a handgun. Hernandez was shot once in the lower leg.
Police say it appears the three men could not get the garage door to open enough to drive the car out. Officers were unable to locate any of the suspects in the area.
Hernandez was taken by ambulance to Jennie Edmundson Hospital for treatment. Her injury is not life threatening. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to contact Council Bluffs police detectives at 712‐328‐4728 or tips can be left anonymously by calling 712‐328‐STOP (7867).
