Campers Return To Fremont Lakes After Flooding

Things are slowly getting back to normal at Fremont Lakes State Park after the flooding in March. The park reopened Wednesday, just in time for spring and Memorial Day weekend.

There are some limitations for boaters. Power boats are usually able to access an area of the park where boating will be off-limits because the tree debris in the water.

The park superintendent says boats can only go 5 miles-per-hour in some areas. On top of that, the rushing flood waters washed out two main travel roads through the park. Both of them are blocked off by barricades and visitors are being detoured around.

Organizers say the park is in pretty good shape after volunteers continued to come out and clean up the area.

“People everywhere with rakes and shovels and bags cleaning up the grounds and cleaning stuff out of the lakes," Camper John Kieny told 6 News.

Park Superintendent Bill Booth says “Starting next week we're going to get crews together to start getting some of the trees and debris and making it safe for our visitors and so people are good to boat here. Hopefully by the end of May things can get back to normal."

Booth says getting things back in shape has been a community effort.
