UNO Taking Extra Security Steps

After a report of a sexual assault and a possible kidnapping at Elmwood Park, UNO is taking steps to tighten security measures for student and staff safety.

Chancellor Jeffrey Gold sent out a statement to UNO that they are taking steps to protect the safety and well-being of the Maverick family.

UNO's Department of Public Safety will work closely with the Omaha Police Department as they are investigating the two incidents.Security patrols campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week and those on campus can request an escort to or from buildings by calling their main desk at 402 554-2648.

Now through May 12th, no parking permits will be required to park in certain areas and at certain times.At 1 p.m. weekdays, general use stalls in faculty/staff and student surface lots on Dodge Campus and Scott Campus East Garage and West Garage in general use stalls, permits are not needed.No permits are needed all day at the Pacific Street Garage in general use stalls.This garage is connected to Dodge Campus through use of the shuttle service.Parking will also remain open on weekends.Appropriate permits will be needed for reserved, handicapped, meter, visitor and special use stalls.

UNO is also sharing safety recommendations.That includes being aware of surroundings, avoid parking in isolated areas, stay in well-lit areas on busy paths and travel in groups.
