Zoo Welcomes Penguin Chicks To Exhibit

Four chicks will be joining the gentoo penguins at the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium at the Henry Doorly Zoo on Wednesday.

The chicks are all around two months old and their sexes are unknown.

Two sets of parent penguins laid the eggs, which hatched in December. The parents raised the chicks until they were one month old, at which time they were moved to a behind-the-scenes area to work with keepers.

The chicks now weigh between 14 and 16 pounds. Adult gentoo penguins weigh between 15.5 and 22 pounds. The zoo currently houses 37 gentoo penguins and is just one of five North American institutions that is home to the sub-species of penguins, which are listed as near threatened.
