Charges against the man accused of shooting an Omaha gang unit officer have been amended.
John Ezell Jr. is headed to trial on the amended charges which include assault and weapons violations. Ezell remains behind bars on $3 million bond after waiving his preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
The shooting happened during a September traffic stop when police say Ezell shot Officer Ken Fortune and officers then returned fire, shooting Ezell. Officer Fortune has recovered and is back on the job. Ezell has also recovered from injuries sustained in the incident.
In the amended criminal complaint, instead of Attempted Murder charges he now faces Attempted Assault and Assault of a First Responder. Both charges carry a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison and with the gun charges added on, Ezell faces a maximum of 250 years behind bars.
