Reminder: Shovel Your Sidewalks Or Pay The Price

Omaha city officials are preparing for the snowfall that lies ahead this season and they’re also gearing up for the homeowners who don’t shovel their sidewalks.

City ordinance says you have 24 hours after the city has cleared the major streets to get your walks cleared. If you don’t get them scraped, you might have a problem. The city will remove it for you, but that could end up costing you a pretty penny.

April Hogue tells 6 News that she doesn’t think it’s fair for the city to fine homeowners who don’t get their walks shoveled on time. “Some people have different disabilities or handicaps. I just don’t think it’s fair that you should be able to fine somebody for not removing the snow from their property.”

Officials only come out to shovel when someone complains about the snowy walks but April said, “If you’ve got an enemy on the street you’re done for, you know what I mean?

This snow season city officials will charge you $6 per linear foot to clear off 1 to 6 inches of snow. If you have a 50 foot sidewalk, that could cost you a $300 dollar fine. The rate rises if the snow keeps falling with a six to twelve inch snow costing $8 per linear foot and anything twelve inches or more billed at $10 per linear foot.
