A Bellevue Police Officer who spent the last two months at the Douglas County Jail awaiting trial is out of jail after his bond was reduced from $1 million to $30,000.
Investigators say Craig Wiech was intoxicated when they came to his home in west Omaha in late August. There they found his girlfriend, Carrie Brown, dead in a bedroom. Wiech said she had shot herself.
The Douglas County Sheriff said he was combative during the investigation that night and took swings at a cop and a firefighter. Wiech was charged with assault on a peace officer, but wasn't charged in connection with Brown's death.
Because of that, a judge reduced the bond so that Wiech needed to come up with $3,000 instead of $100,000.
A bond as large as $1 million is usually reserved for accused killers and other violent offenders. "A high bond on this type of case is unusual," Omaha defense attorney Glenn Shapiro told 6 News. Shaprio is not involved in this case.
The Douglas County Attorney said the case remains an active investigation. They also said they did not have any new evidence to present at the bond review hearing.
Wiech remains on administrative leave from the Bellevue Police Department.
