Judge Temporarily Bans County From Taking Over Historic Building

It's a win, at least for now, for one Omaha building owner. A temporary restraining order has been issued, blocking Douglas County from taking over ownership of a historic downtown building by eminent domain.

The county wants to take over the building at 18th and Howard so they can tear it down to make way for a new justice center. The county would building the justice center to make room for lawyers who are cramped for space in the Douglas County Courthouse across the street. The justice center would also be the new home to Douglas County's juvenile detention facility.

Bob Perrin, the building's owner, sued the county to keep ownership after the Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted to take over ownership of the building through eminent domain.

The county wanted to have already started demolition on the building so they could begin construction on the new facility by the end of the year.
