Some Bellevue high school students are getting a boost from the Department of Defense.
The National Math and Science Initiative is working to help military-connected students, and others, by combining its college readiness program and teacher training so that students get the education they deserve.
At Offutt Air Force Base on Tuesday, the Department of Defense made sure that advanced training will continue. The College Readiness Program delivered a $1.3 million grant funding in check form to Bellevue high schools.
Officials said getting more students involved in advanced placement classes is crucial.
"If we don't do something in the United States in terms of upgrading our work force so that we will be able to provide those jobs, then the country loses out," said Bernard Harris, the CEO of the National Math and Science Initiative.
The students, like Bellevue East senior Carly Schreck, also see the need for the college preparation. "I want to know how college courses work. I also want to know how to run my own classroom. I think the high pace AP classes will help me to time schedule and not to procrastinate."
Officials said the advance placement students will be ready for college and then ready for the workforce in an ever changing world. Administrators at both Bellevue East and Bellevue West will share the $1.3 million grant to help students and teachers prepare for the future.
