Drunk Man Forces Lockdown At Two Elkhorn Schools

The school year was only two days old when two Elkhorn schools went into lockdown Thursday afternoon and 911 was called.

Douglas County Sheriff's Captain Wayne Hudson tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB a very intoxicated man showed up at Grandview Middle School around noon to pick up his child.  But Hudson says the man was told by school officials that his child didn't go to that school.

The man then drove across the street to Sagewood Elementary School.  Hudson says staff from Grandview called Sagewood and the principal met the man in the parking lot.  He was again informed that his son didn't go there.

Hudson says both schools had gone into lockdown and the Sagewood principal called 911.  Hudson says when they arrived they found the man drunk inside the car in the parking lot.  "A .320, which is four times the legal limit.  It's amazing that he was able to even drive from one school to the other," Hudson says.

The man was arrested for DUI.  Hudson says the man's child actually goes to a different school than the ones she showed up at.

"I'm just glad that he went to the wrong school.  My fear is had he went to the correct school and picked up his child, he might have been involved in a motor vehicle accident."

Hudson praised the staffs of both schools for the way they handled the troubling situation.  "All the school administrators did the correct procedures.  They notified other schools and once the principal (at Sagewood) felt there was an issue she was able to lockout her school and notify us."
