A pre-teen is in trouble with the law after setting a fire that destroyed a playground in Fremont.
Authorities say an officer was dispatched to Bell Field Elementary around 9:30 Wednesday night with the Fremont Fire Department was called soon after that. Emergency crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze on the school's playground equipment. School officials said no one was hurt.
Fremont Police Lt. Ed Watts told 6 News a 12 year old boy admitted he was at fault for starting the fire, but said he did not mean to burn down the playground. Investigators also said he was remorseful. Watts said the boy was cited for Third Degree Arson and released to his parents.
It's up to insurance to see how quickly a new playground can be installed, and is expected to be in the $30,000 range. School officials say the playground won't be ready by the start of school in mid-August.
