An elderly couple from Clearlake, California appeared in Nebraska court again this week.
On Wednesday, 80 year old Patrick Jiron and 70 year old Barbara Jiron both pleaded No Contest to one charge each of Possession of more than one pound of Marijuana. In exchange for their pleas, York County prosecutors dropped additional charges of Intent to Deliver, No Drug Tax Stamp and Failure to Appear.
The Jirons were arrested in December by York County sheriff's deputies who found 60 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle. The drugs had an estimated street value of $300,000. Authorities say when stopped by law enforcement, the couple told them they didn't know it was illegal to transport marijuana through Nebraska. The couple informed officers they were intending to take the pot to the east coast to give to family members as Christmas presents.
Patrick and Barbara both face up to two years in prison when they are sentenced in August. The couple also face Possession of Drug Money charges in Lancaster County. Those charges came from a separate traffic stop in January.
