Just ahead of the 2018 installment of the College World Series, the Omaha Police Department is unveiling their latest tool in crime prevention.
A brand new mobile command center is now ready for use by officers and Lt. Jay Leavitt says an upgraded command center was much needed since the previous center was nearly 20 year old. "Mileage wise and wear and tear on the actual vehicle itself was minimal and it didn't have a lot of high mileage and there weren't a lot of mechanical issues with the old truck but technology-wise and space-wise more than anything else the old truck was obsolete."
The new command center cost the police department $900,000, most of which was collected from private donors. Leavitt says the center boasts a number of new technologies and comforts that will help OPD in security situations like the CWS and long-lasting crime scenes. "We have technologies that can allow us to contact someone inside a home if they don't have a landline or their cell phone is dead or something like that," said Leavitt.
The old command center is still in active duty and will act as a back up in case of an issue with the new vehicle or if two scenes occur at the same time.
