How To Stay Cool During CWS Heat

Thousands of fans will descend on the metro this weekend for the start of the College World Series and they will be greeted with blistering heat. 

With the weather forecast calling for temperatures near 100 degrees, and the heat index reaching 105 degrees, the Omaha Fire Department is passing along some tips on how to keep yourself safe in the heat. 

  • Drink more fluids than usual (non-alcoholic).  Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink.
  • Do not drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar.
  • Avoid very cold drinks as they can cause the stomach to cramp.
  • Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.
  • Never leave anyone, including pets, in a closed, parked vehicle
  • Try to stay in shady areas
  • Don’t overexert yourself physically
  • Wear sunscreen that has an SPF of 15 or greater.

People at a greater risk for heat related illness include infants, young children, people over the age of 65 and those who are already ill.

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion include but are not limited to:

  • Headache, dizziness or fainting
  • Irritability or confusion
  • Weakness and wet skin
  • Thirst, nausea, or vomiting

Symptoms of Heat Stroke include but are not limited to:

  • Confusion, unable to think clearly, passing out, collapse, of seizures
  • May stop sweating

The Omaha Fire Department will have paramedics at and around TD Ameritrade Park during College World Series games.  If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, call 911 or locate an Omaha Fire Department member.
