As Omaha Police continues to investigate a shooting in the Old Market Saturday night that killed a 20 year old woman and wounded six other people, Mayor Jean Stothert says they will do everything they can to find those suspects.
"The Omaha Police Department is working diligently this weekend to identify the persons responsible for the shooting Saturday night in downtown Omaha," Stothert said in a statement. "I offer my sincere sympathy to the family of Ms. Harris and all who were injured."
Stothert says "downtown residents, workers and visitors can be assured we will increase police presence in the area as we prepare for the College World Series later this month and other summer events."
The shooting happened around 11:45 near 11th and Farnam. Police say Jasmine Harris died at the hospital from her injuries. Six other victims were all treated for non-life threatening injuries at area hospitals. They were identified as the following:
- Dewayne Staley Jr., 28
- Makye Thomas, 15
- Gregory Austin, 19, possible non-gun related injury
- Kristen Prater, 16
- Velia Vasquez,18
- Robert McGhee-Gould, 20
Police said the shooting began as an altercation in the Old Market area and investigators believe the shooting may be gang related from incidents that happened last month.
"Chief Schmaderer and his team will continue to work with our community partners to identity those responsible for violent crime and make our city a safe place for all," Stothert says.
