Omaha Police are sorting out the details of a crash Sunday night that seriously injured a driver. Fire and rescue personnel responded to 20th and Missouri Avenue around 8:30 p.m.
The investigation revealed that a maroon 1992 GMC Safari minivan was traveling westbound on Missouri Avenue when its driver attempted to turn left onto southbound 20th Street. At the beginning of the turn, the front-end of the Safari collided with the drivers side of a red 1994 Honda Civic that was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Missouri Avenue in the midst of passing by 20th Street.
As a result of the collision between the vehicles, the Civic spun and collided with a metal traffic signal support on the southeast corner of the intersection then the building of Queens Pizza at 1921 Missouri Avenue (minor damage to building).
The Civic sustained massive damage from the collisions. The unrestrained driver of the Civic, Robert Appley, was transported by Omaha Fire/Rescue to Nebraska Medicine to be treated for serious injuries sustained in the collision. None of the 8 occupants of the Safari (3 adults and 5 children) reported any injuries.
The minivan driver was cited for no operators license and failure to yield -the-right-of -way. This collision remains under investigation.
