A group hoping to provide Nebraskans with property tax relief announced Friday that they have ended their campaign to get a major proposal on the November ballot.
The Yes to Property Tax Relief Committee wanted to place a $1.1 billion property tax relief proposal on the ballot, but have now stopped petition signature collection efforts.
Committee spokesman Trent Fellers says they are thankful to the Nebraskans who signed the petition and helped with the effort, but that it is time to close up shop. "Unfortunately, we no longer believe their interests are best served by this initiative and we are ending the campaign.”
Fellers points to the Unicameral's inaction on tax relief as a factor in their decision. “Doubts remain that a ballot measure to change state law is the correct means to address this issue. We’ve observed the Legislature closely and are not convinced the Legislature will effectively implement our proposal to reduce property taxes, even if enacted by the people. The decision not to proceed with the initiative petition does not mean we are ending our efforts to reduce the property tax burden, only that we are exploring other options...”
In the 2018 legislative session, state senators were not able to pass any sort of property tax legislation.
