Jerry Murtaugh had recently graduated from Nebraska as Dave Humm arrived to begin his career as the Husker's quarterback. But in the tradition of "once a Husker, always a Husker" the two got past a rough start to become close friends. And even as Humm battled the ravages of multiple sclerosis, Murtaugh says Humm was always more concerned about he could help other former Huskers rather than accept help for himself.
