The deaths of an Iowa family in Mexico may have been due to a faulty water heater.
The head prosecutor of the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo, Miguel Angel Pech, told local media Monday that the water heater "was leaking gas, maybe from use or lack of maintenance." Pech says that "a high level" of gas was found in the rented condo where the family was staying.
The bodies of Kevin Sharp, his wife Amy and their two children, twelve year old Sterling and seven year old Adrianna, were discovered Friday at a rental condominium in the beach town of Tulum.
The family had been dead for about 36 to 48 hours, according to the prosecutors office. Autopsies showed they suffocated after inhaling toxic gases, but it's unclear what type of gas led to their deaths.
