An Omaha man has died after crashing into the back of a parked Nebraska State Patrol cruiser early Tuesday morning.
Omaha Police say the trooper was parked in his cruiser on the northbound shoulder of I-680 near Blondo when an SUV rear-ended him around 1:45. The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway and into a ditch.
Trooper Christopher Goodrich and the SUV driver, 21 year old Avry Johnson, were taken to Bergan Mercy for treatment. Omaha Police say Johnson died from chest injuries suffered in the crash. In accordance with state law an autopsy will be conducted. Trooper Goodrich suffered a broken arm.
The crash shut down three lanes of traffic on I-680 for about two hours and remains under investigation.

Nebraska State Patrol Trooper is recovering after being injured in a crash on I-680 early Tuesday morning.
Omaha Police say the trooper was parked in his cruiser on the northbound shoulder of the interstate just past Dodge when an SUV rear-ended him around 1:45. The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway and into a ditch.
The trooper and SUV driver were both taken to Bergan Mercy for treatment of their injuries. The trooper reportedly suffered serious injuries, but in a tweet, the Nebraska State Patrol said the trooper is expected to survive. The SUV driver reportedly suffered critical injuries in the crash, but there has not been an update on their condition at this time.
The accident shut down three lanes of traffic on I-680 for about two hours. The crash remains under investigation.
