The next phase in convicted serial killer Anthony Garcia's case is set to begin in June.
Garcia was originally ordered to begin death penalty proceedings on March 12th, but that date is now set for June 13th. The move came in late February after Garcia's new defense attorneys needed more time to examine Garcia's mental health records. The lawyers, with the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, had difficulty getting files from Garcia's previous attorneys Chicago defenders Robert Motta Sr. and his son Robert Motta Jr.
Garcia was found guilty of the 2008 deaths of eleven year old Thomas Hunter, the son of Creighton University Medical Center pathologist Dr. William Hunter, and the family's housekeeper Shirlee Sherman. Garcia as was also convicted for the 2013 deaths of Creighton pathologist Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife Mary. Prosecutors say Garcia carried out the murders as revenge for his firing in 2001 from the Creighton University Medical Center.
