MASS EVACUATION ORDERED OVER ERUPTING BALI VOLCANO
An erupting volcano on Bali led Indonesian authorities today to order a mass evacuation of some 100,000 people from a danger zone around it, and caused the island’s international airport to close, stranding tens of thousands of travelers. Lava is welling up in the crater of Mount Agung, which has been spewing ash nearly 10,000 feet into the atmosphere since the weekend.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that a larger eruption is possible. The volcano’s last major eruption in 1963 killed some 1,100 people.
