A 39-year-old Oklahoma congressman has been slammed after saying at a town hall on Tuesday that the idea that his constituents pay for him to work in Congress is, quote, "bullcrap."
Republican Rep. Markwayne Mullin said, "You say you pay for me to do this. Bullcrap. I pay for myself. I paid enough taxes before I got there and continue to through my company to pay my own salary. This is a service. No one here pays me to go." When several people at the town hall pushed back on what he said, Mullin answered, "I'm just saying this is a service for me, not a career, and I thank God this is not how I make my living."
As a member of Congress, Mullin, who was first elected in 2012, gets a salary of $174,000 a year plus benefits. He also own several plumbing businesses.
