One of the questions when Disney acquired everything from FOX last year was what would happen to the X-Men? We got our answer pretty quick. Of course, they'll become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what about the X-Men movies FOX had made and not yet released? Would Disney bother releasing them? Last summer, they put out Dark Phoenix to almost a unanimous thumbs down (It was one of my ten least favorite movies in 2019). But there was still one more movie lurking around...The New Mutants.
With a release date pushed back at least four times now due to poor preview screenings, and a myriad of reshoots, The New Mutants is an X-Men story involving some of the lesser known mutants and is described by many who have seen it to be a straight up horror movie. Which would be a vastly different direction than the traditional superhero spectacle. A great idea, in theory. But so many people have reported that this movie is awful I can't be too optimistic. Movies that have their release date pushed back multiple times are rarely good. Especially a movie involving well known intellectual property.
I want The New Mutants to succeed because it's an almost entirely untapped genre in superhero movies. However, I am not going to bet on this one being heralded as a success.
The New Mutants hits theaters April 3rd.
