The Biggest Risk to the U.S. Electrical Grid

Bureaucratic delays, studies, and public sector expense has delayed the "hardening" of the electrical grid to make it safe from an electromagnetic pulse launched by an enemy or even by a naturally occurring outburst by the sun.  Experts say such a pulse would knock power out for months and could lead to the deaths of tens of millions of Americans. We got this update from Doug Ellsworth, Nebraska coordinator of the Task Force on National Homeland Security-Congressional Advisory Board.  Doug did note after the interview that while the progress on hardening the grid is disappointing, one power company reported earlier this month that it had hardened 500 of it's substations, and Dominion Power in Virginia is in the process of hardening it's DC Beltway assets.
