Teen Cancer Survivors Head To College World Series

A College World Series tradition will continue Monday night.  Young cancer patients at Nebraska Medicine will get a limousine ride and police escort from the hospital to a College World Series game.

The cancer survivors and their guests will ride in style from the UNMC to TD Ameritrade Park for the 6:00 game.  The kids will gather outside the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center around 4:45 and the limo will leave at 5:00 p.m.

"As soon as you say limousine, their eyes light up," says Nebraska Medicine Child Life specialist Debbie Wagers.  "And then you throw in, oh yeah, we've also got a police escort."  Each teen patient will receive $15 to spend at the ballpark.

Wagers say the trip provides young cancer patients the opportunity to get to know each other, share experiences and have some fun.

Usually on the way down it's a little bit quieter cause not everyone knows each other," Wagers says.  "Then when we're heading back after the game the radio is cranked and they've got windows open.  It's really loud and obnoxious and a great time."

The trip to the ballpark is part of Nebraska Medicine’s “Oncology Teen Night Out” program.
