Mailbox Theft Suspect Appears In Court

The man police say is responsible for a rash of mailbox thefts made his first court appearance Friday morning.

Bond was set at $95,000 for 32 year old Jeremy Jakub. A public defender was also appointed and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 11.

Jakub was arrested Tuesday near 72nd and Grover after a collision with a Postal Inspector's vehicle. The Postal Inspector was working with Omaha Police Department detectives from the burglary unit when they caught up to him. Jakub was wanted for a number of mail thefts and damage to several "cluster-style" mailboxes in the metro.

Police said he tried to flee, but his car was disabled in the collision. He ran on foot, but was arrested after a short chase and a brief struggle.

Jakub is facing charges of Criminal Mischief, Possession of Burglary Tools and Possession of an Unauthorized Financial Transaction Device. Prosecutors say Jakub could be responsible for more mailbox thefts that remain under state and federal investigation.
