(Omaha, NE) -- An Omaha post office branch is being renamed in honor of a World War II veteran.

The Benson branch, at 62nd and Maple, will be named after Petty Officer First Class Charles Jackson French. The move comes after Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon introduced H.R. 4168 in June of 2021. The House unanimously passed the resolution on Wednesday. Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer introduced a similar bill in the Senate.

French rescued fifteen injured shipmates from shark-infested waters in the Pacific theater. After his time in the military, French eventually moved to Omaha and still has many family members in the area.
