COVID-19 positive Nebraska prison inmate dies at Lincoln hospital

A Nebraska prison inmate who was diagnosed with COVID-19 has died.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says the inmate died at a Lincoln hospital on Friday. NDCS says the inmate was in his 50's, had several underlying health conditions and had recently been diagnosed with COVID-19. Prison officials say the man had been hospitalized for two weeks, and received his coronavirus diagnosis when he was admitted to the hospital earlier this month.

NDCS says for the privacy of the family, as well as to maintain the confidentiality of the man’s medical records in accordance with state law, they are not releasing the name of the inmate. He was in prison on charges out of Saunders and Lancaster County that included burglary, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

Prison officials say an exact cause of death has not been determined yet. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
