After snow, freezing rain along with ice and high winds enter Iowa Saturday

DES MOINES, Iowa - Friday snowfall left 5.7 inches of accumulation in Des Moines, 4-6 inches across the state north of I-80 and 3-4 to the south.

The main concern afterward is freezing drizzle and light freezing rain that could leave around a tenth of an inch across large parts of central and southern Iowa overnight Friday into Saturday morning. Travel could be very hazardous, especially on roads that are untreated or minimally treated.

Early Saturday, a strong cold front will move from west to east across Iowa, bringing a shot of light snow, very strong winds, and falling temperatures. Snowfall accumulations will likely be less than an inch across Iowa.

Wind speeds could reach 30 mph with gusts of 45+ mph at times. The gusts could create white out to near white out conditions at times, especially in northwest Iowa where a Blizzard Warning is in effect Saturday.

Travel will continue to be hazardous, especially around open areas and roads that have seen or will continue to see minimal treatment and plowing.
