Flooding Closes I-29 North Of Council Bluffs

Iowa Department of Transportation officials have closed I-29 in both directions from Crescent to I-680 Interchange at Loveland due to Missouri River flooding.

It's the third time since March that stretch of interstate has had to be shut down due to flood waters.

Austin Yates with Iowa DOT says another area they are keeping their eye on is westbound I-680 from I-29 into north Omaha. He anticipates it will have to close sometime late Friday morning or early afternoon.

Yates says there are no plans to close I-29 south from Council Bluffs to the Missouri border. "But we still have crews patrolling constantly and we're monitoring our cameras just to make sure of that."

Iowa DOT officials also say relying on phone or in-vehicle navigation systems may not be reliable because closure changes happen rapidly and navigation systems can route traffic through areas not designed for heavy or some types of traffic.
