New Trial Date Set For Man Accused Of Murdering Mollie Tibbetts

An Iowa judge has set a new trial date for the man accused of murdering a University of Iowa student.

On Friday, 24 year old former farm hand Cristhian Bahena Rivera had his trial date moved to September 3rd. Rivera had been set to go to trial in Poweshiek County on April 16th, but his defense attorneys said they needed more time to go through the investigation file from prosecutors.

Rivera is accused of killing 20 year old Mollie Tibbetts, who disappeared while out for a run July 18 in Brooklyn, Iowa. Rivera worked at a dairy farm a few miles from where Tibbetts disappeared. Her body was found a month later in a cornfield. An autopsy showed that Tibbetts was stabbed to death.

Rivera, a Mexican national, is accused of being in the United States illegally.
