Third Nor'easter Brings Heavy Snow, Wind To New England

The third nor'easter in the last 11 days is pummeling New England with heavy snow, wind, and blizzard conditions as more than 1,400 flights have been cancelled.

Blizzard conditions are defined by the National Weather Service as three or more hours of sustained wind or frequent gusts to 35 mph or greater joined by falling or blowing snow that reduces visibility.

Amtrak said today train service between Boston and New York City was being suspended due to the weather conditions. Service will be restored once conditions improve Amtrak said in a statement.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for much of New England, including the coast of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Up to 2 feet of snow is being forecast for parts of the area.

Forecasters say lingering light snow will continue for most of northern New York and New England into Wednesday morning. Maine will get the brunt of the snowfall, with temps in the Northeast plunging to levels normally seen in January and February - not March.

Snowfall in the Boston area could be as heavy as 1 to 3 inches per hour with winter storm warnings in effect through the evening. Forecasters say the region could see snowfall totals of up to 20 inches. Boston schools are closed on Tuesday, with a snow emergency in the city beginning Monday night.

Wind gusts of up to 68 mph were recorded on the coast of Cape Cod Tuesday morning. Strong gusts are expected in the region through the day, which could knock down power lines and cut service to thousands.
