Omaha Fire Recruit Class Starts Training

Now that they have been welcomed by Omaha Fire Chief Dan Olsen and Mayor Jean Stothert, the newest fire recruit class has begun training at the Omaha Public Safety Training Center.

31 recruits are in the class which begins the 12-week training process.

This class was supposed to begin training in March, but those plans were pushed back by Covid-19.

“You all now have the opportunity to save lives and to change lives,” Mayor Stothert told the prospective firefighters.

Battalion Chief Coby Werner tells 6 News during the 12-week academy, the recruits will follow CDC and internal guidelines to keep everyone safe from coronavirus.

“We’re wearing masks 24/7, every single minute they’re in this training facility they’re wearing a mask, we’re social distancing, there’s hand sanitizer and a strict cleaning policy at the end of every day,” said Werner.
